Adjectives describing movies, books or music. Fill in the gaps with the correct adjectives from the list below:

Match the adjectives with their definitions

Learn and repeat the adjectives using the vocabulary cards.

Practice pronouncing the adjectives from VOCABULARY BANK.

Read the text and write the missing adjectives.

One of the most useful things when learning a language is noticing. When reading a text or watching a video, try to notice how words interact in a sentence, what vocabulary is chosen, words that are used together etc.

In the text below, try to find and highlight collocations with some of the adjectives you used to fill the gaps. (Collocations are words or phrases that often go together, e.g. heavy rain, winding road, express a wish etc.) Then highlight other useful structures/collocations connected with entertainment.

Answer the following questions.

  • Can you name some underrated works of art that you believe should get the recognition they deserve? Why do you think these works have a lot to offer?
  • What elements make a book a truly engaging experience for you? Can you provide an example of a book that you found incredibly gripping?
  • Describe a well-written book you have read recently. What aspects of the book kept you hooked from the beginning to the end?
  • Have you ever watched a movie with a heartwarming ending? How did it make you feel, and why do you think such endings leave a lasting impression on watchers?
  • In your opinion, why do some music artists get the recognition they deserve while others remain underrated?

Emily and Sarah are co-workers chatting after the weekend. Sort the dialogue in logical order. Click on the paragraph, hold it, and drag it to the correct position.

Complete the dialogue with the phrases that express opinions, and the ones that are used for agreeing or disagreeing.

Study the chart and try to think of some phrases you can add to it.

  • Personally,…
  • It’s a bit too …for my taste.
  • It’s (not) up my alley.
  • It’s just not for me.
  • Fair enough.
  • I guess you’re right.
  • I see your point, but…
  • …I suppose, but…

Imagine someone makes those statements. What would you answer using the phrases from the chart above?

“While many consider The Beatles’ music to be timeless, I think their songs don’t hold up as well in today’s music landscape.”

“The ‘Star Wars’ franchise is incredibly overrated; the plot is predictable, and the characters lack depth.”

“Beyoncé is often hailed as the queen of pop, but I believe her music is overrated and doesn’t showcase enough artistic depth.”

“George Orwell’s ‘1984’ is often praised as thought-provoking, but I think it overstates its political message and fails to engage on a personal level.”

“Disney’s ‘Frozen’ is marketed as a heartwarming story, but I find it emotionally shallow and overly commercialized.”
