Read the sentences and highlight the phrases that describe habits.

Habits are things we do regularly, sometimes without thinking or knowing we are doing them

Match the structures with a similar meaning.

Decide which structures describe a past habit.

Would is often contracted to ‘d: I’d read before bed.
“You used to…” changes to “Did you use to…”, “I didn’t use to…” in questions and negatives.

Learn and repeat the new phrases using the vocabulary cards.

Find a different way to express the same meaning. You can do this excercise few times.

When talking about the past, we CAN’T use would to talk about states (e.g. be, like): When I was young, I would used to like dancing.

Fill in the gaps with one word.

Decide if the sentence is correct.

‘Used to’ review. Fill in the gaps with the correct form of “used to” and the verb in parentheses. Use full forms.

’Used to’ pronunciation. Practice saying the phrases linking the words.

When speaking, we link ‘used to’ together, and it is pronounced /ˈjus·tu/ (we don’t pronounce the ‘d’). So it’s pronounced the same in statements, questions and negatives.

Complete the sentences so they are true for you.

  • I tend to … in the mornings.
  • By and large, I don’t…
  • I go to … once in a blue moon, because…
  • As a rule, my friends and I…
  • When I was younger, I would…
  • I watch … now and again.
  • I used to … all the time, but now I prefer…

Think about your past and present habits. Write the sentences using all phrases from the VOCABULARY BANK from Exercise 3.

Complete the following exercises on the slide to review the material.
